Tottenham confirmed the signing of Johnson from Nottingham Forest on July 2, the final day of the summer transfer window. The transfer fee was £47.5 million.
Johnson found the back of the net with his first touch in the 40th minute of the second half with the score at 0-1. He took a pass from Ebbs Bissouma, beat a defender and calmly finished from an unmarked area.
But the fairytale debut goal was halted at the whistle. The assistant referee called for offside.
Fortunately, Tottenham pulled off a miraculous comeback in the 53rd minute. Substitute Eden Hazard equalized with a header, and two minutes later, Dejan Kuluczewski scored the winner off a pass from Hazard. It was a 2-1 win for Tottenham.
The 22-year-old Johnson’s reaction was special. “It’s a dream come true for me to be here today and play a game like this,” he told Spurs Play. I’m so happy,” he said.
Johnson scored 10 goals in 44 games for Nottingham last season, including 38 in the EPL. The pacey striker has been touted by Spurs and Wales alike.
