Alonso was one of the early favorites to become Real’s next manager. As a player, Alonso won the Spanish La Liga and UEFA Champions League titles with Real from 2009 to 2014. Ancelotti’s previous stint in charge of Real was a mixed bag.

The quality of his playing days continued into his managerial debut. After taking charge of Real Sociedad’s B team, Ancelotti took over as head coach of Leverkusen Fire in 2022, leading the team from the bottom of the table to sixth place and the UEFA Europa League semifinals. After the start of the 2023-2024 German Bundesliga, the club is second in the league with four wins, one draw and 13 points.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the club’s home game against Las Palmas on Sunday, Ancelotti said: “I’ve coached Alonso before and I know he’s doing a great job at Leverkusen. He understands the game well. I hope that one day Alonso, Raul Gonzalez and Alvaro Arbeloa will be Real managers.”
