The return of Tottenham Hotspur left-back Ryan Sessegnon is being delayed.
Global sports media ‘The Athletic’ reported on the 5th (Korean time), “Sessegnon was away longer than Bentancur. He was ruled out in the summer due to a hamstring problem that required surgery, but did light training last month. However, his return is still a long way off and he continues to train alone,” the report said.스포츠토토
Sessegnon was once a wing resource with great expectations in England. He scored 15 goals and 6 assists in 46 games in the English Championship in the 2017/18 season while at Fulham. Tottenham believed in Sessegnon’s potential and invested 27 million euros (about 38.3 billion won) in his recruitment in the summer of 2019.
Contrary to expectations, Sessegnon failed to establish himself at Tottenham. It was for two reasons. First of all, both offense and defense were ambiguous. The defense was unstable at left back and the offense was lacking at wing forward. For this reason, manager Jose Mourinho preferred Ben Davis and Japhet Tanganga over Sessegnon at Tottenham.
The second reason was injury. Coach Antonio Conte, who took over after Mourinho left, appointed Sessegnon as left wingback. In fact, Sessegnon was unable to play in the game immediately after joining Tottenham due to a hamstring injury. At Tottenham, he was sidelined due to injury eight times in four years. His last season saw him out early due to a hamstring injury in February.
Sessegnon could have been given a chance under Anger Postekoglou, but he has yet to feature in a game due to an injury suffered during pre-season. Instead of Sessegnon, Italian rookie Destiny Udozi is being given a chance.
Although Udoji continues to perform well, there is no suitable backup to support him. Sergio Reguilon was loaned to Manchester United during the summer transfer window. Ben Davis has decent skills, but lacks destructive power in his attacks.
Sessegnon could serve as Udozy’s backup, but there is no clear date for his return. According to the British Evening Standard, it will take a few more weeks before he can join the squad. Tottenham’s concerns are growing over Sessegnon’s ‘glassy temperament’.
